Springfield Armory made the 1911 Defender to meet the needs of entry-level owners who want affordable guns that work well. The design draws inspiration from classic handguns used by the military. For example, the Springfield Armory 1911 Defend has the type of short trigger that you commonly find on military pistols.

Some people may find the Springfield Armory 1911 Defend a bit large for a CCW. The gun still makes an excellent defensive weapon that you can use to prevent danger and secure situations that get out of hand.

Springfield Armory 1911 Defend: Specifications

First, let’s look at the specifications to help you decide how you want to use the 1911 Defend.

The 1911 Defend is a big, heavy handgun. It weighs 39 ounces, which puts it just shy of 2.5 pounds. That's definitely on the heavy side, but you can get used to extra weight by carrying the gun a little more each day. On the first day, wear it until it makes you uncomfortable. As you gain more experience, your body will adjust to the weight.

The size will matter more to most concealed carriers. The 5.5-inch height shouldn’t bother you much since that’s a pretty typical height for CCWs. The 8.6-inch overall length, though, will make it difficult for you to conceal the gun unless you have a large frame.

Instead of concealing the Springfield Armory 1911 Defend, you could pair it with an OWB holster that keeps it visible. Visibility means that you lose the element of surprise, but this intimidating gun will make people think twice about causing trouble while you’re around.

Despite the size, the magazine only carries seven .45 rounds. Extra magazines only cost about $20, though, so you can get extras. Keep in mind that additional magazines will add weight to your security.

The Springfield Armory 1911 Defend Offers Excellent Value

Don’t immediately discount the Springfield Armory 1911 Defend because of its large size. It gives you a lot of terrific features without forcing you to spend a lot of money.

You can expect to spend $500 to $550 on a 1911 Defend. At that price, it’s impressive that you get a forged carbon steel frame and slide, forged stainless steel barrel, and wood composite grip.

Users say that this is a surprisingly accurate handgun. You could spend a lot more on a handgun that offers significantly less. If you’re looking for value, you can’t pass over the Springfield Armory 1911 Defend.

Smaller Springfield Armory 1911 for Concealed Carry

If you’re not comfortable carrying a large gun in public, you have other options from Springing Armory’s line of 1911 weapons.

The 1911 Range Officer Compact 9mm has a 7.6-inch overall length and 5-inch height. The smaller gun weighs 29.5 ounces (about 1.8 pounds). You even get an extra round since the magazine can carry eight bullets.

Expect to spend quite a bit more on this company handgun, though. It retails for about $924. Pairing it with one of our IWB Kydex holsters will make it easy to conceal, though. Some people will find the higher price worth it.

For an even smaller option, you can choose the 6.6-inch 1911 EMP 9mm handgun. It holds nine rounds and weighs just 27 ounces. You get plenty of shots from a small, lightweight gun. You will spend more money on it, though. The 1911 EMP 9mm sells for about $1,255. It’s not for beginners, but it’s an excellent pistol for concealed carriers willing to invest in their security.
